Lucebert was born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk on
the 15th of September 1924 in the working-class quarter
of “De Jordaan” in the heart of Amsterdam,
Holland. When he was nearly two years old, his parents
marriage broke up, leaving him and his two brothers
to grow up in the custody of their father. At home
Lubertus didn’t find a good family atmosphere
so he spent the days making drawings and inventing
stories. In 1936 he went to secondary school where
two teachers noticed his emerging talents. They stimulated
the young boy to read literature and keep drawing,
a stimulation which he didn’t find among his
family relatives. At school he met some good friends
who shared his interest for culture, among them the
later well-known poet Hans Andreus.
In 1939 he finished school and went on helping his
father, who was a house painter. That circumstance
gave him the opportunity to paint his fantasies on
a larger format while they were preparing the walls
which of course, always ended in one colour. One day
a well-known journalist saw this and instantaneously
recognised his talent. He arranged a meeting with
the architect Mart Stam, who was the director of the
“Kunstnijverheidsschool” (later the Rietveld
Academy in Amsterdam), and he admitted Lucebert (although
in reality he was too young) to the school. His father
was of the opinion that in the arts one couldn’t
earn a living, and decided to retire Lucebert from
the art school after four months. This caused a final
rupture between father and son and from then on Lucebert
went forward without stopping.

Lucebert nació como Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk
el 15 de septiembre de 1924 en el barrio obrero “De
Jordaan” en el corazón de Amsterdam,
Paises Bajos. Teniendo él apenas dos años,
sus padres se divorciaron, dejandole a
él y a sus dos hermanos bajo la custodia de
su padre. En casa no encontraba el buen ambiente familiar
y se pasaba el día dibujando e inventando historias.
En 1936 entró en un instituto de educación
secundaria y allí dos profesores se dieron
cuenta de su talento y estimularon al joven a leer
literatura y a seguir dibujando, una estimulación
que no encontró en su entorno familiar. En
este instituto conoció a buenos amigos con
quién compartía su interés por
la cultura, entre ellos el luego conocido poeta Hans
Andreus.
En 1939 finalizó sus estudios y pasó
a trabajar con su padre, que pintaba casas. Este hecho
le dió la oportunidad de pintar sus fantasias
sobre un formato más amplio mientras preparaban
los encargos que luego, por supuesto, sobrepintaban
con una capa de unicoloración. Un día
un periodista conocido lo vió y reconoció
de inmediato su talento. Este organizó un encuentro
con el arquitecto Mart Stam, que era el director de
la “Kunstnijverheidsschool”, ahora la
Academia Rietveld en Amsterdam, y admitió a
Lucebert (que entonces en realidad era demasiado joven)
a esta academia. Su padre opinaba que con el arte
no se podía ganar la vida y despues de quatro
meses decidió retirarlo de la academia. Esto
provocó la ruptura final entre el padre e hijo
y desde entonces Lucebert siguió sin parar.
